1. The Awakening

Ethan's eyes fluttered open, and he was met with a blur of white and the faint scent of disinfectant. He tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over him, forcing him back onto the pillow. A faint beeping noise hummed in the background, and the soft hiss of oxygen filled his ears. As his gaze slowly focused, he took in the sterile surroundings of a hospital room. A single window let in a sliver of sunlight, casting an anemic glow over the space. A figure in a white coat stood beside his bed, scribbling notes on a clipboard. "Welcome back, Mr. Blackwood," the doctor said, not looking up. "You've been with us for a few days. My name is Dr. Patel. How are you feeling?" Ethan's mind was a complete blank. He had no idea who he was, how he got there, or what had happened to him. Panic set in as he scrambled to recall even the smallest detail about his life. His eyes darted around the room, searching for any clue, but everything seemed foreign. "I...I don't know," Ethan stammered, his voice hoarse from disuse. He tried to swallow, but his throat was parched. Dr. Patel finally looked up, a mixture of concern and curiosity etched on his face. "Don't worry, it's normal. You've been through a traumatic experience. Your memories will come back in time." Ethan's gaze locked onto the doctor's, searching for any hint of what he was talking about. "What experience?" he asked, his voice laced with desperation. The doctor hesitated before responding, "We're not entirely sure. You were brought in with no identification, and you've been...unresponsive. But we've run some tests, and it appears you've suffered some kind of head trauma." As the doctor spoke, Ethan's mind began to wander. He was plagued by snippets of images and disjointed sounds – the rush of wind, the smell of saltwater, and the faint whisper of a voice. But whenever he tried to grasp onto these fragments, they slipped away, leaving him with more questions. "Can I see my family?" Ethan asked, hoping to find some connection to his past. Dr. Patel's expression turned sympathetic. "Your sister, Sarah, has been visiting you regularly. She's been taking care of you since...since you were brought in. I'll arrange for her to come see you now." As the doctor left the room, Ethan's thoughts grew more turbulent. He felt like he was drowning in a sea of uncertainty. The beeping of the machines and the hiss of oxygen seemed to grow louder, making his head spin. Just as he was starting to feel overwhelmed, a woman with long, curly brown hair and a warm smile walked into the room. "Ethan, oh, I'm so glad you're awake," she said, rushing to his side. Ethan's eyes locked onto hers, searching for any spark of recognition. But his mind remained a blank slate. "Who are you?" he asked, feeling a pang of guilt for not knowing his own sister. Sarah's smile faltered, and she looked away, trying to compose herself. "I'm your sister, Sarah. We've been through a lot together, Ethan. You've just...you've been gone for a while, and I've been taking care of you since you got back." The word "back" hung in the air, and Ethan's curiosity was piqued. Back from where? What had he been doing? The questions swirled in his mind, but before he could ask any of them, a sudden vision flashed before his eyes – a glimpse of a clock tower, its face shattered, and a figure standing in the shadows, whispering a single word: "Run." Ethan's heart racing, he sat up, despite the wave of dizziness that threatened to overwhelm him. "What's going on, Sarah?" he asked, his voice low and urgent. "What happened to me?" Sarah's eyes clouded, and she glanced around the room, as if she feared being overheard. "I'll tell you everything, Ethan, but not here. Not now. You need to rest and recover first." As she spoke, the machines surrounding Ethan's bed began to beep more rapidly, and the oxygen flow increased. Ethan's vision started to blur, and he felt himself being pulled under, back into the darkness. But just before he lost consciousness, he heard the whisper again, this time louder, more insistent: "Run, Ethan. They're coming for you."
