13. The Sister's Betrayal

Ethan's eyes fluttered open, his mind foggy and disoriented. He was met with the faint scent of antiseptic and the hum of fluorescent lights overhead. As his vision cleared, he found himself in an unfamiliar room, with sterile white walls and a single, narrow window that let in a sliver of gray light. A faint memory of Agent Ross's menacing smile lingered in his mind, and his stomach twisted into knots. He tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over him, forcing him to lie back down. The room spun, and his head throbbed with a dull ache. Ethan's gaze drifted around the room, searching for any sign of his captors or a means of escape. That's when he saw her – Sarah, his sister, standing in the corner, her arms crossed and a look of concern etched on her face. But as their eyes met, Ethan noticed something off about her expression. The concern seemed forced, and her eyes betrayed a hint of guilt. A shiver ran down his spine as he realized that something was terribly wrong. "Sarah?" Ethan's voice was barely above a whisper, but his sister's eyes snapped towards him, her expression shifting to one of relief. "Ethan, thank goodness you're awake," she said, rushing to his side. "I was worried sick about you." Ethan's mind reeled as he tried to process what was happening. He reached out, grasping for his sister's hand, but she pulled away, her eyes darting towards the door. "What's going on, Sarah?" Ethan's voice was laced with a growing sense of unease. "Where am I? Why am I here?" Sarah's gaze dropped, and she fidgeted with her hands, avoiding his questions. The air in the room seemed to thicken, heavy with unspoken truths. Just then, the door creaked open, and Agent Ross strode in, a self-satisfied smile spreading across his face. "Ah, excellent timing. I see our guest is awake and ready to join the party." Ethan's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with suspicion. "What's going on, Sarah? What do you have to do with him?" Sarah's eyes flashed towards Agent Ross, and for a moment, Ethan thought he saw a flicker of fear. But then, her expression hardened, and she turned back to him. "I'm sorry, Ethan. I had to do what was best for you," she said, her voice dripping with a mix of conviction and guilt. Ethan's world came crashing down around him. "What are you talking about, Sarah? You're working with him?" Sarah's eyes dropped, and she nodded, a small, almost imperceptible movement. Ethan felt as though he'd been punched in the gut, his breath knocked out of him. "Why?" he whispered, his voice shaking with rage and hurt. Sarah's gaze snapped back up, and for a moment, Ethan saw a glimmer of the sister he once knew, the one who had always been there for him. But it was quickly extinguished, replaced by a cold determination. "I did it to protect you, Ethan. You're not well. Your memories, they're... damaged. And Agent Ross can help you. He can fix you." Ethan's laughter was bitter, his mind reeling with the implications. "Fix me? You think he's going to fix me? He's going to erase me, Sarah. He's going to take away everything that makes me who I am." The room seemed to shrink, the air growing thicker and more oppressive. Ethan's eyes locked onto his sister, his heart heavy with a sense of betrayal. "I never thought you'd do this to me, Sarah. I never thought you'd betray me like this." Sarah's face twisted, a mixture of pain and regret etched on her features. "I'm sorry, Ethan. I really am. But I had to do what I thought was best for you." Agent Ross cleared his throat, his voice slicing through the tension. "Enough sentimentality. We have work to do. Ethan, you're coming with me. We're going to take care of those memories of yours, once and for all." Ethan's gaze never left his sister's face, his heart heavy with a sense of loss and betrayal. As Agent Ross's agents closed in, Ethan knew he had to act fast. He had to stop them, no matter the cost. With a surge of adrenaline, Ethan launched himself off the bed, his eyes locked onto the door. He had to escape, had to get away from Agent Ross and his sister's betrayal. But as he stumbled towards the door, he felt a hand grab his arm, spinning him back around. It was Sarah, her eyes blazing with a fierce determination. "Ethan, don't. Please, just don't." Ethan's gaze locked onto hers, his heart heavy with a sense of sorrow. "You're too late, Sarah. You've already made your choice. Now, it's my turn." With a fierce cry, Ethan wrenched his arm free, sending Sarah stumbling backward. He sprinted towards the door, Agent Ross's agents hot on his heels. The world around him was a blur, the only sound the pounding of his heart and the echo of his sister's betrayed whisper. "Ethan, no! Come back!" But Ethan didn't look back. He couldn't. He had to keep running, had to keep fighting. For his memories, for his sanity, and for the truth. The door slammed shut behind him, and Ethan found himself in a long, dark corridor, the only sound the echo of his footsteps. And then, just as he thought he'd escaped, he heard the voice, low and menacing, echoing down the corridor. "You'll never make it out of here alive, Ethan. You'll never remember who you truly are." Ethan's heart skipped a beat as he stumbled to a stop, his eyes scanning the darkness. Who was speaking? And how did they know his deepest fear? The voice seemed to come from all around him, the words echoing off the walls. Ethan's skin crawled, his senses on high alert. He knew he had to keep moving, had to keep running. But as he turned to face the darkness, he realized that he was not alone. A figure, shrouded in shadows, stood watching him, its eyes glinting with a malevolent intent. And then, everything went black.
