4. First Contact

Ava's boots kicked up tiny plumes of reddish dust as she stepped out of the ship and onto Elyria's surface. The landscape stretched out before her like an eternal, barren sea, with nary a wave or ripple to break the monotony. The air was thick with an otherworldly silence, punctuated only by the soft crunch of gravel beneath her feet. She breathed in deeply, the scent of ozone and burned earth filling her lungs, and felt a shiver run down her spine. "Captain, I'm going to start scanning the area," Ava called out, her voice carrying across the stillness. "See if I can pick up any signs of...anything." "Roger that, Ava," Captain Lee's voice crackled over the comms system. "Be careful out there. We don't know what kind of environment we're dealing with." Ava nodded, though she knew the captain couldn't see her. She began to sweep her gaze across the horizon, her eyes scanning for any sign of movement or anomaly. The sky above was a deep, bloody red, like a wound that refused to heal. As she walked, the silence began to feel oppressive, weighing her down like a physical force. She quickened her pace, her heart beating just a little bit faster. "Hey, Captain, I've got something here," Ava said, her voice tinged with excitement. "Looks like some kind of settlement, maybe a few kilometers east of our position." "What kind of settlement?" Captain Lee's voice was cautious, his tone laced with a hint of skepticism. Ava's eyes narrowed as she examined the terrain. "Hard to say. It's definitely been abandoned, but...I don't know, it looks like whoever was here left in a hurry. There's debris scattered everywhere, and what looks like a makeshift shelter over there." As she approached the shelter, Ava noticed something strange - a piece of torn fabric caught in a jagged rock outcropping. She reached out to touch it, her fingers brushing against the rough texture. It was a piece of clothing, unmistakably human. A shiver ran down her spine as she realized she might not be alone on this planet after all. "Ava, we're reading some weird energy signatures coming from your position," Captain Lee's voice interrupted her thoughts. "Can you tell me what's going on?" Ava's gaze snapped up, her eyes scanning the horizon. "I don't see anything, Captain. Just this...this abandoned settlement. But I did find some signs of recent human habitation." There was a pause, and for a moment Ava wondered if she'd lost contact with the ship. Then Captain Lee's voice came back online, his tone low and serious. "Ava, we're going to try and pinpoint the source of that energy signature. In the meantime, I want you to get back to the ship and prep for nightfall. We don't know what kind of creatures might be lurking in the dark." Ava nodded, though she knew the captain couldn't see her. She began to make her way back to the ship, her senses on high alert. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the landscape in a deep, foreboding twilight, Ava felt a sense of unease creeping over her. She quickened her pace, her heart pounding in her chest. As she reached the ship, Ava noticed that the sky was growing darker, the stars beginning to twinkle like ice chips in a black glass. She felt a shiver run down her spine, her skin prickling with gooseflesh. Something was off, something that didn't feel quite right. "Ava, we're trying to hail Mission Control," Captain Lee's voice interrupted her thoughts. "See if we can get an update on the situation back on Earth." Ava nodded, taking a deep breath as she began to work the comms system. The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the soft crackle of static. She waited, her eyes fixed on the console, as the seconds ticked by like hours. And then, just as she was about to give up, a voice cut through the static. It was a woman's voice, low and husky, with a hint of an accent that Ava couldn't quite place. "...this is...Elyria...calling...Ava...Moreno..." The voice was fragmented, broken up by bursts of static, but Ava's heart skipped a beat as she realized she was being hailed by someone - or something - on the planet's surface. "Ava, what's going on?" Captain Lee's voice was urgent, his tone laced with concern. Ava's eyes locked on the console, her mind racing. "I'm not sure, Captain. But I think we've made contact with...something. Someone." The voice came again, stronger this time, the words tumbling out in a rush. "...Ava...Moreno...welcome...to...Elyria...we...have...been...waiting..." Ava's skin crawled, her senses on high alert. Who - or what - was behind this mysterious transmission? And what did they want with her? As the voice faded into static, Ava felt a chill run down her spine. She was not alone on this planet, and she had a feeling that her presence here was not a coincidence. The darkness seemed to be closing in around her, the shadows deepening into abyssal pits that threatened to swallow her whole. And then, just as she was trying to process the implications of the mysterious transmission, the ship's lights flickered and died, plunging her into an inky blackness that seemed to have a life of its own. Ava's heart was racing, her breath coming in short gasps. She was alone, and she was not alone. The darkness seemed to be watching her, waiting for her next move. As she stood there, frozen in terror, Ava realized that she was completely at the mercy of this unforgiving planet, and whatever - or whoever - was lurking in the shadows, waiting to strike. The last thing she heard was the sound of her own ragged breathing, and the faint whisper of a voice, echoing in her mind like a curse: "Welcome to Elyria, Ava...we have been waiting..."
