13. Marcus's Past

Ava's feet pounded the damp earth as she sprinted through the forest, the faint scent of saltwater and decaying leaves filling her lungs. Lena's labored breathing echoed behind her, their footsteps weaving in and out of sync. The trees seemed to close in around them, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. Ava's heart still reeled from the encounter with Dr. Zhang, her mind racing with questions. Who was watching them? And why? As they burst into a small clearing, Lena grabbed Ava's arm, her fingers digging deep. "Wait, Ava, we can't just keep running. We need to talk." Her voice was laced with a mix of fear and determination. Ava slowed to a stop, her chest heaving. The sunlight filtering through the trees cast dappled patterns on the forest floor, but the beauty of the scene was lost on her. Her eyes scanned the perimeter of the clearing, searching for any sign of movement. "Talk about what? We already know the island's not what it seems. We need to find out what's really going on." Lena's grip on Ava's arm tightened. "I've been digging into the island's records, trying to find any information about the people who live here. And I found something about Marcus." Ava's thoughts snapped back to the enigmatic figure, his cold, calculating gaze still etched in her mind. "What about him?" Lena hesitated, her eyes darting around the clearing before focusing on Ava. "I found an old news article, hidden deep in the island's archives. It's about a boy, a teenager, who was involved in a violent crime. The boy's name was Marcus, and the article said he was sentenced to juvenile detention." Ava's curiosity was piqued. "What does this have to do with Marcus, Father Elijah's right-hand man?" Lena's voice dropped to a whisper. "The article mentioned that the boy, Marcus, was taken in by a charismatic leader, a man who promised to help him turn his life around. The leader's name was Elijah." Ava's mind reeled as the pieces began to fall into place. "You think that's the same Marcus? The one who's been watching us?" Lena nodded, her eyes locked on Ava's. "I do. And I think that's why he's so loyal to Father Elijah. He owes him, Ava. He owes him for saving him from a life of crime and violence." The air seemed to vibrate with tension as Ava processed this new information. She felt like she was staring into the abyss, the darkness of the island's secrets yawning open before her. "We need to be careful, Lena. If Marcus finds out we know about his past..." Lena's grip on Ava's arm loosened, but her voice remained firm. "We'll be careful, Ava. But we need to know more. We need to understand what's driving Marcus, what's making him so loyal to Father Elijah." As they stood there, the forest seemed to grow quieter, the trees looming over them like sentinels. Ava felt a shiver run down her spine, her senses on high alert. She knew that they were playing with fire, that uncovering the secrets of the island could have deadly consequences. Suddenly, a faint rustling sound echoed through the trees, the snap of a twig making Ava's heart skip a beat. Lena's eyes met hers, a silent understanding passing between them. They knew they had to move, to get out of there before they were discovered. As they turned to leave, Ava caught a glimpse of something glinting in the underbrush. A small, leather-bound book, partially hidden by the leaves. She felt a surge of curiosity, her heart pounding in her chest. Without hesitation, she reached down and picked up the book, the cover creaking as she opened it. The pages were filled with handwritten notes, the writing messy and hurried. But one entry caught Ava's eye, a phrase that made her blood run cold. "I will do whatever it takes to protect him, to keep him safe. Even if it means sacrificing everything." Ava's eyes met Lena's, a silent question passing between them. Who was the writer of this journal, and what did they mean by "him"? As they stood there, the forest seemed to grow darker, the shadows deepening into an abyss of secrets and lies. And then, without warning, the trees seemed to erupt into chaos. Twigs snapped, leaves rustled, and the sound of footsteps echoed through the forest. Ava's heart was racing, her senses on high alert. She knew that they had to get out of there, to escape the island's clutches before it was too late. But as she turned to run, she felt a hand grab her arm, spinning her back around. Ava's eyes met Marcus's, his gaze cold and calculating. "You shouldn't have come here," he whispered, his voice dripping with menace. "You shouldn't have dug up the past." Ava tried to struggle, but Marcus's grip was like a vice. She felt a surge of fear, her heart pounding in her chest. And then, everything went black. As Ava's world went dark, she felt herself being dragged away, the forest floor rushing up to meet her. She tried to cry out, but her voice was muffled, her words lost in the darkness. The last thing she remembered was Lena's scream, a sound that was cut off abruptly, leaving Ava with only the echoes of her own terror.
