11. Asher's Secret
The world snapped back into focus as Lulu's knees buckled, Asher's grip on her hand tightening as he pulled her close. The sound of sirens still echoed through the air, but it was the look of fear in Asher's eyes that made her heart stumble. The police officers, the rival taxidermists, and the chaos around them faded into the background as Asher's face filled her vision. "Lulu, I'm so sorry," he whispered, his breath warm against her ear. "I should have told you, I should have warned you."
As he spoke, the scent of motor oil and worn leather wafted from his jacket, mingling with the sweet aroma of the blooming wildflowers that lined the roadside. Lulu's mind reeled, trying to make sense of the chaos around her, but Asher's words only added to the confusion. "Told me what?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, as the officers closed in.
Asher's gaze darted around, his eyes locking onto something behind her. Lulu followed his gaze to see Ruby standing beside their caravan, her arms crossed and a defiant look on her face. "Ruby, don't," Asher warned, but the older woman just shook her head.
"You're going to have to tell her sooner or later, Asher," Ruby said, her voice firm but laced with a hint of sadness. "You can't keep running from your past forever."
The officers reached out to take Asher away, but Lulu held tight to his hand, her fingers intertwined with his. "What's going on, Asher?" she demanded, her voice rising above the din. "What are you hiding from me?"
Asher's eyes met hers, and for a moment, Lulu saw a glimmer of the man she thought she knew. But it was quickly replaced by a mask of guilt and shame. "I'll tell you everything, Lulu," he promised, his voice low and urgent. "Just please, don't let them take me away. Not yet."
The officers exchanged a skeptical look, but one of them nodded. "Alright, we'll give you five minutes. But that's all."
As the officers stepped back, Asher pulled Lulu toward the caravan, the rival taxidermists watching with a mixture of curiosity and malice. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of preservatives and sawdust. Asher led Lulu to the back of the caravan, where a small workbench was cluttered with half-finished mounts and scattered tools.
"Lulu, I..." Asher began, his voice cracking as he struggled to find the words. "I used to work for Gid, okay? I was one of his taxidermists, but I...I got in over my head. I made a mistake, a big one, and Gid's been chasing me ever since."
Lulu's mind reeled as she tried to process the revelation. Asher, the man she had grown to trust, had been working for their enemy? The thought sent a shiver down her spine. "What did you do?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Asher's eyes dropped, his gaze fixed on the floor. "I falsified some tax returns, Lulu. I was in deep financial trouble, and Gid offered me a way out. But it was a trap, and I fell for it. I've been running from him ever since, trying to make amends, but...but I don't know if I can ever make it right."
The words hung in the air like a challenge, and Lulu felt her heart torn in two. Part of her wanted to walk away, to leave Asher and the community behind. But another part, a part that had grown to love the quirky taxidermists and their way of life, wanted to stay and fight. "Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, her voice firm but laced with hurt.
Asher's eyes snapped back to hers, a desperate look in their depths. "I was scared, Lulu. I was scared of losing you, of losing this life. I know I don't deserve it, but...please, don't leave me. I'll do anything to make it right, to prove myself to you."
The sound of sirens outside grew louder, and Lulu knew their time was running out. She looked into Asher's eyes, searching for the truth, searching for a reason to stay. But as she gazed into their depths, she saw something that made her heart skip a beat – a glimmer of uncertainty, a hint that Asher's secrets might be more than she could handle.
And then, just as she was about to make a decision, the door to the caravan burst open, and Gid's voice cut through the air like a knife. "Time's up, Asher. You're coming with us." The officers stepped forward, their handcuffs at the ready, and Lulu felt her world spinning out of control. As Asher's eyes met hers, she saw a flash of fear, and then, everything went black.
